A few weeks ago, my daughter Riley won a Fisher Price Trio Building Set from Dr. Mommy’s blog. I love Dr. Daisy and all of her work about managing time and family. Dr. Daisy should know! She has five children who she home schools. She also runs a consulting business with practical parenting tips. I only have Riley so sometimes I am amazed that it’s possible to have a normal life with several children. I also want to homeschool so I always look forward to her tips.
Product Description from Fisher Price’s Website:

Includes 84 pieces. All pieces in the TRIO™ Building System work together. Collect them all and build a world of fun!” This set is the starter building set for 3-5 year olds.
Riley spied the box with the new toys as soon as she came in the door. She is 2 1/2 and she played with these blocks and accessories for over an hour. They really did capture her attention and I was surprised at how creative she was with the blocks. She first build the more obvious house with the blocks and then decided we were going to build a boat. Riley was very excited about the whole thing. She even helped put the blocks away in the storage container because we could snap her boat and house she built on to the lid and we didn’t have to tear them up. This beginning set also came with a car and a man that she insisted on keeping out. They may be her favorite pieces to the whole set.
From a mom point of view, I really liked the block set too. It allows more imagination, like an erector set. But the pieces are bigger and easier to handle. I thought some of the curved stick like pieces (like a arch or elbow shape) were a little tough to snap together even for me. I was also a little surprised that the lid does not snap on but just sits on top of the box. Granted this does make it easier for her to open herself but it makes it easier for her to get open when I’m not around to supervise how far she spreads the pieces.
Overall, I think this is a great product and I love that there are upgrades where she can keep playing with this for years. Some of the 8-11 year old kits look really neat, like this castle. They are also fairly priced. The Beginner Kit is priced around $20. They have a “crazy creatures” bug kit with eye balls, etc that I am going to go pick up for Riley tomorrow. The 54 piece kit is only $10. I am not usually one to run out and buy a toy but I think they have a winner here.
